Learn to paint in pastels.  It is fun and easy. The results are luminous.  Students will create paintings using pastels – from getting the idea to planning the painting, selecting materials and generating the first sketches.  Learn how to handle, apply and mix pastels.   In addition to learning how to handle different types of pastel and the pros and cons of various grounds, topics include learning and using compositional elements, identifying a focal point and developing the point of interest, rules of atmospheric perspective, and creating believable foreground, middle ground and background planes.  The emphasis of the classes will be on building strong paintings and developing a personal style.

Introduction to Pastel

3 sessions       
Materials fee TBD  (instructor will supply materials)
Introduction to types of pastel, from hard to medium to ultra soft, and the advantages and characteristics of each;   Overview of equipment and materials needed, from types and styles of paper to an introduction to optional tools and materials for creative work;   From beginning to end: how to begin a painting from selecting paper to how to handle finished pieces;   Demonstrations and hands-on exercises using different pastel and paper combinations.  Students leave the class with samples of various materials.

 

Beginning Pastel Painting

6 sessions       

Students use their own materials (instructor will supply materials list)
Creating paintings using pastels:  from getting the idea to planning the painting, selecting materials and generating the first sketches, blocking in from a value sketch;   mixing pastels on the surface to develop the painting, learning (and breaking) painting “rules”;   capturing the nuances of light in pastel; using pastel to lay in and develop believable, colorful shadows and to model shapes and form that have the illusion of weight and volume.   The emphasis will be on developing and creating paintings.

 

Advanced Beginner/Intermediate Pastel Painting

Weekly or Bi-Weekly sessions           

Students use their own supplies (instructor will supply material list)
This class is for advanced beginner to intermediate artists who are already adept at beginning and developing a painting. The emphasis of the classes will be on building strong paintings and developing a personal style.Topics include learning and using compositional elements, identifying a focal point and developing the point of interest, rules of atmospheric perspective, and creating believable foreground, middle ground and background planes.  Students will use advanced techniques to give their paintings texture, nuance, luminosity and visual impact.
