Mastering Shadows

Reflections, 11 Views

Intermediate to Advanced Artists

This class will take the mystery out of how and where to place shadows and explain how to use color to make them  rich, luminous, and exciting, without using either black or white.  Participants will explore shadows that result from front lighting, backlighting and sidelighting, in natural or artificial light.  Exercises are designed to create a sense of objects coming forward or pushing back into shadows, and to conquer ways to tie appropriately shaped shadows to the main object’s shape.  We will experiment with warm, cool, complementary and analogous colors, and will learn how to use colors to develop a full range of darks suitable for every need. Demonstrations will be conducted in oil, watercolor, and pastel.   Participants can choose to work in one or all of these media.
